This course invites us to dig into a biblical framework for poverty alleviation, giving us a way of thinking and being that allows us to align our financial giving to God’s story of change.

In God’s Kingdom, generosity is the fuel for ministry, because we are each image-bearers of our abundantly generous God. Since you’re joining us here, you’ve probably already recognized that faithful stewardship of God’s resources includes giving generously from all that God has blessed us with.

But faithful stewardship also involves giving God’s money away well—that is, giving generously to ministries and causes that are aligned with God’s mission. As we do so, we participate with the Triune God in His work in the world. What an incredible blessing and responsibility!

This is easier said than done, though. How do we know where we should give the Lord’s money? What criteria should we use to guide us in our decision making?

There are no easy answers to these questions or a simple formula to follow, but wisdom is available to us as we seek to steward God’s resources to advance His mission. The Bible provides us with a compass to keep us heading in the right direction, and the Holy Spirit has been guiding God’s people for many centuries, giving valuable insight on these issues that we can learn from.

So while there is no simple recipe, it is our hope that the Holy Spirit will use the material you’re about to encounter to help all of us to grow a bit more in this wisdom and step more fully into the flow of God’s work in the world.

Justin has served with the Chalmers Center since 2016 and coordinates the work behind books, articles, blog posts, online courses, video projects, small group curriculums, and produced by Chalmers’ staff and ministry partners around the core concepts of a biblical framework for poverty alleviation and works with churches and organizations to help them apply these ideas in their ministry programs. Justin and his wife, Rachel, have four daughters, and he has served his local church as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, preacher, missions committee chair, and outreach coordinator. He holds a B.A. in communications from Bryan College (2006) and an MDiv (2024) from Reformed Theological Seminary.
